UGI BLEED

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is gastrointestinal bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, commonly defined as bleeding arising from the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. Blood may be observed in vomit or in altered form as a black stool.

CAUSES

Peptic ulcer: Upper abdominal pain

Esophageal ulcer: Odynophagia, gastroesophageal reflux, dysphagia

E

Mallory-Weiss tear: Emesis, retching, or coughing prior to hematemesis

E

Variceal hemorrhage or portal hypertensive gastropathy: Jaundice, abdominal distention (ascites)/

E

Malignancy: Dysphagia, early satiety, involuntary weight loss, cachexia

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of GI bleeding can be either obvious or hidden

Vomiting blood, which might be red or might be dark brown and resemble coffee grounds in texture

E

Black, tarry stool

E

Rectal bleeding, usually in or with stool

E

Lightheadedness

E

Difficulty breathing

E

Fainting

E

Chest pain

E
